In 1994 Ireland hosted the Eurovision song contest, and a short entertainment was devised to fill in a gap in the programme. But the audience loved it more than any of the competing songs, and from a 7-minute entertainment a 2 hour show was born. The style of dancing uses the feet a lot but the arms hardly at all, and is remarkably strenuous, though it doesn't look it. And it made famous Michael Flatley, who devised it, choreographed it, and starred in it.
