Peter Warlock (1894 - 1930)
Pieds en L'air (from Capriol Suite)
Musicologist Philip Heseltine was also a composer - for which activity he used the pen name Peter Warlock. As a musicologist he was a founder of the revival of interest in early music, and as a composer he wrote Capriol Suite, a suite for strings based on 16th century dances. Pieds en L'air is one of the Suite's most popular movements, its melody delicate and tender; in 9/4 time, the irregular phrasing adds to the magical effect, while the absence of the double basses creates a lightness, as if the dancer is hardly touching the floor (hence the movement's title).
