We open the season with contrasting works by acknowledged masters of the early 20th century. Nielsen's flute concerto combines delicacy with rude humour, and is one of the finest in the repertoire. The seventh symphony of Sibelius is his most concise, in which he compresses the whole drama into a single movement. Bela Bartok wrote his Concerto for Orchestra in the USA, and it is his most popular orchestral work. This is for good reason – it is full of melody and excitement, and gives all sections of the orchestra a turn in the spotlight!
