Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934)
Pomp & Circumstance March No.
4, Op. 39
Elgar wrote five marches, collectively
known as Pomp & Circumstance. They were written
between 1901 and 1907, and published as his Op 39,
though the 5th was not published until 1930. The first
is the famous "Last Night of the Proms"
piece, whose big tune was set to words 'Land of Hope
and Glory'. The fourth suffered the same fate, but
only during World War 2 when the tune was often sung
to patriotic words by A P Herbert "All men shall
be free".
