Ronald Binge (1910 - 1979)

Sailing By

Ronald Binge, born and brought up in Derby, is one of the great names of British light music. His early music experiences included several years playing in a cinema orchestra in Derby. Later, his arrangements created the "Mantovani sound" for that famous band leader, before he went on to compose some of the best known of all light orchestral pieces. These include “Elizabethan Serenade”, “The Watermill” (used as the theme for BBC TV The Secret Garden), and the engaging Miss Melanie. “Sailing By” will be recognised by those of you who listen to Radio 4 when you can’t get to sleep at night.
