Midori Sugiyama (Violin)

Midori was born in Japan in 1981 and started her musical education at the age of five. In 1997, she entered the Toho Gakuen School of Music where she studied with Kenji Kobayashi.

Whilst studying in Japan, Midori attended many masterclasses with eminent musicians including Zaker Bron, Thomas Brandis, Christian Tetzlaff, Shlomo Mintz, Kyoko Takezawa, Masao Kawasaki and Dora Schwarzberg. Midori was also awarded a special prize in the Japan Classical Music Competition and performed Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with a variety of different professional orchestras including the Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra and Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra.

Midori graduated from the Toho Gakuen School with honours in March 2003 and then entered the Royal Northern College of Music Postgraduate course in September 2003 where she currently studies with Yair Kless. Midori has been awarded several prizes for her achievements at the college including the Diana Bolton, the Norman George Prize, and the Helen Porthouse Paganini Prize. In March 2004 she gained the highest Diploma in Professional performance with distinction. Midori performed Brahms’ violin concerto with RNCM Symphony Orchestra in October 2004, conducted by Elgar Howarth, as a winner of concerto audition. She also performed Barber’s Violin concerto with Manchester Beethoven Orchestra in November 2004. Midori was invited to perform at the Schumann and Brahms Festival at the RNCM in January 2005 as a trio member and as well as a duo performer. In March 2005, she gave her debut recital at Manchester’s prestigious Bridgewater Hall. She performed Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with the Blackburn Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Mark Heron, as well as RNCM Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jac van Steen, in December 2005. She was invited to perform at the Shostakovich Festival at the RNCM in January 2006 as a trio member.

Midori has taken part in many International Music Festivals including Sachsischer Mastercourse for violin (Germany), Bowdoin International Music Festival (United States of America) and Keshet Eilon International Violin Mastercourse and had a Masterclass with Maestro Ida Haendel (Israel) as a scholarship recipient.

Midori is thankful for the support of the MBF Myra Hess Trust towards continuing her studies.
