The cello concerto by US-born composer Kevin Malone is a new work written to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the devastating loss of life in New York's Twin towers attacks. We are delighted to work again with Christian Elliott, who performed Samuel Barber's cello concerto so memorably for us a couple of seasons ago.
Mahler's fifth symphony is one of his most uplifting works, moving from the tragedy of the opening funeral march to a blaze of joy at the conclusion. It gets there via the famous adagietto, used so powerfully in Visconti's 1971 film of Death in Venice.
